What flowers that can be easily grown in Indiana will bloom into late September?

We are having a wedding in my backyard. We are looking for flowers that will still be in bloom at the end of September. We%26#039;ve thought of mums already. We would like to find a vine that would grown on a trellis nicely and still be blooming if possible. Any other suggestions are most welcome as well. Thanks!

morning glories usually continue to bloom well into fall.
Reply:All the above answers are good. I would like to add the daylilly. Not only blooms into the fall but the flowers are tasty in salads or alone. Tastes like sweet lettuce. They can also tolerate a variety of soils and conditions once established.
Reply:Marigolds are lovely until late fall and can even take a light frost. Sunflowers (Helianthus) bloom until fall. Pansies will bloom again in the fall. I like ornamental kale, especially the purple ones.
Reply:Ivy grows like crazy and it will bloom nicely again in the spring. If you plant some now, by September it should look lush. If you want some color, Impatiens would do well. Impatiens come in a variety of colors such as pink, violet, red, orange and white.
Reply:Asters. Try the Michaelmas Daisy. It%26#039;s named so because it is in bloom around September 29th which is the feast day of St Michael.

Reply:You could also try Dahlias. They will bloom until the first frost.They are easy to plant, and come in hundreds of different colours. I have very little problem with bugs on mine.The price I pay per tuber varies from a $1.00 to a high of $ 15.00. There is a Dahlia society, to find a grower near you.One of biggest growers I know of is in Canby,Oregon.They are called Swan Island Dahlias. I don%26#039;t think they have a web site. Do check out these flowers for a great variety in style of blooms. Have nice wedding day.

My wedding is on 10-20-07 and the BM%26#039;s dresses are a burnt orange accented with gold and the tuxes are chocolate brown. I need help on choosing the colors for the flowers! I don%26#039;t think i want and orange color cause it will clash with the dresses. I also want simple hand-tied bouqets. my favorite flowers are gerbera daisies and cala lilies and I don%26#039;t think they mesh well together. as you can tell i am clueless! I am making them myself which isnt a problem I just need imput on the colors!

Reply:Yellow! Take a swatch of the BM dress fabric to the flower shop and see how the color looks next to the flowers.
Reply:Even though you are making the bouquets yourself, you could still ask a florist for ideas. Bring pictures/swatches of the dresses and tuxes and ask them for ideas/advice. If you don%26#039;t want to tell them outright that you are making your own bouquets, schedule an appointment with the thought that if they are reasonable, and can meet your budget, you will hire them.

Some of the best visual examples I found were at www.brides.com once I chose my flowers, I found a great website to purchase them from at really reasonable prices. www.farmstogo.com The mini calla%26#039;s are ALWAYS pricey, but this website has the best prices not only on bulk mini-calla%26#039;s but also on any bulk flowers. Reply:I would go with the cream color of the calla lillies and maybe a chocolate brown for the gerber daisies or a deep purple. Isn%26#039;t there a pretty auburn color of calla lillies? Maybe you could put some of those in as well.
Reply:sounds a lot like my wedding from 10-21-06. nice date! my BM%26#039;s (I only had two) one was in Burnt orange and the other was in a chocolate dress. each of our Best men, our officiant (who is not my father-in-law), and my dad were all in Brown suits. my dress was ivory and that was the color of the flowers. there were touches of oranges, but only as accents. my flow ere was the calla lilly and the ivory was beautiful against my dress, the other dresses, as well as the men%26#039;s suites. good luck.

Reply:Hi! Well, I totally identify. I was married in October of 2006 and chose some of the same colors. My bridesmaid%26#039;s dresses were a gorgeous chocolate brown. The men wore black pin strip tuxes w/ a champagne colored vest/tie. The champagne looks so rich and beautiful w/ the brown dresses. The flowers were a burnt orange calla lily with other flowers mixed in that were dark yellow tinged in red, and red flowers. My dress was an ivory color w/ champagne detailing. the result was gorgeous.

For your situation, I would use a deep red flower tinged with burnt yellow - there are such flowers!
Reply:You could always use flowers in colours like white, ivory, peach and champagne and instead of mixing gerbera daisies and calla lilies in bouquets you could use gerbera daisies in bridesmaids bouquets and calla lilies in the bridal bouquet and vice versa. As for orange flowers clashing with your dresses it would actually work using orange flowers as a lot of brides choose to match the floral arrangements to their bridesmaids dresses.

All of my sister%26#039;s daughters have middle names that are flowers. She is pregnant with another little girl and her heart is set on naming her Alianne (pronouced Ali-anne). So she needs another flower name that would go well with it. Last name Martin, and Lily and Rose are already taken.

Soooo i was wondering what types of flowers should i suggest we plant.

We need plants that are durable and that dont require much maintenance.

Some basic info would be helpful here. :)

Where do you live? Mostly shade? Or mostly sun?

EDIT: Without knowing the answers to the questions above, I suggest asking a local nursery for low maintenance perennials, preferrable herbs and wildflowers (they tend to be pretty care-free).

Echinachea (purple cone flower) and coreopsis make a striking combination. Try adding some lamb%26#039;s ears for texture and a couple clumps of daylilies for extra spikes of color.

Bouquets with no flowers?

Would it tacky or cheap if I had my bridesmaids hold bouquets made out of different ivy plants and leaves? I%26#039;m not a large fan of most of the flowers that could stand to last a whole wedding. The only ones I really like are orchids and lily-of-the-valley, which aren%26#039;t in my budget.

My fiance and I are going for a very earthy undertone to our wedding. Lots of greens and browns. I myself don%26#039;t plan on having a bouquet, or if I do, it%26#039;ll be ivy as well with some lily-of-the-valley picked from my backyard IF they%26#039;re growing at that time.

Would you be scandalized as a guest? Would you be angry as a bridesmaid? They%26#039;ll still be tied up with ivory and brown ribbons and arranged nicely so it looks like a real bouquet. Flowers just cost a bunch, and I see this as a good way of cutting corners for other things like food and photography.

Bouquets with no flowers?

There are a couple of alternative ideas. You could have crystal bouquets, ones made of fall leaves,

or you could use parasols. There is no law that says they have to carry anything.

You should do and have exactly what you wants that compliments what you like... why cut the flowers if you love the ivy, twigs and maybe some feathers that all repersent the elements of nature. well we have been on a few %26quot;dates%26quot; but nothing really appropriate for flowers.. ie roller balding, coffee, going to a comedy club with friends.. well some one mentioned it but thought i would ask you guys and see what you thought. She invited me to her friends wedding and check out a couple sites before.. is it too much or forward to bring flowers?

Reply:I%26#039;d say hold off on the flowers, because you%26#039;re going to a wedding.She needed a date to the wedding, she obviously enjoys your company because she%26#039;s taking you to a friend wedding. I%26#039;d suggest flowers when there is some sort of relationship established, girls like flower but she might find it awkward when you%26#039;re just dating. You could look like you%26#039;re getting a little attached.

I had bought these after having seen them at a dinner party I went to. I saw them on this website real indulgence, for a tenner including postage. I was so impressed with such a bizarre concept. So the idea is that you place a FLOWER into a champagne flute and then pour your Champagne over then watch as the bubbles push the flower to bloom in your glass. After you%26#039;ve had your drink you then eat the flower. The taste is like glacier cherries almost, very fruity. Well I%26#039;ve tried them with spraking water also - which in fact work the same way. I was wondering if anyone else has been more creative and come up with other ideas in using these Wild Hibiscus Flowers in syrup?

You don%26#039;t have to buy flowers to have edible flowers in your food. Did you know Pansies are edible? How about Begonias and Roses? Although I have worked many years in the restaurant business and used the best of the best flowers....You can have the same exotic flare without the cost. Pansies are edible, and come in a variety of colors. use them to accent any meal or dessert. In the %26quot;business%26quot; we used to say: %26quot;When in doubt add more flowers%26quot;. Use them to accent a salad, on the side of your entree, or as a delicate accent to any dessert. Even on a cheese platter of brie, grapes, etc, you can use the flower to accent the beauty of the food. Enjoy yourself! I just wanted to give you some cheap alternatives to buying expensive hybiscus, versus the many flowers you can use, just as lovely, that are also edible. Save money, keep the elegance!
Reply:Grace Paris is right - you can definitely grow these yourself.

We often use them in salads but you can also freeze them in ice cubes or cubes of frozen ice tea or other drinks to add a bit of color later on.

Why won't my hibiscus grow flowers?

My girlfriend has had this hibiscus tree for a few years now, and last year, it had one flower on it. The previous 3 years, and this year, there aren%26#039;t any flowers, much to her dismay. We have it in a 10%26quot; pot in our house (landlord does not allow us to plant it in the yard). The plant is watered daily, sits next to a window, gets plenty of fresh air and is loved well! Are there any tips to get the plant to flower and brighten our day?

Not enough light is your problem. Hibiscus need full sun most of the day.

Its roots are slowly rotting!

Water it when the soil is dry when you scoop up a small handful and actually feel it.

Instead mist the plant to keep the humidity up.

Water weekly and fertilize during the spring and summer growing season only.

No fertilizer in fall and winter

If you can, you might want to buy a grow light to extend its days a little in the winter month, but it usually isn%26#039;t necessary.

Really, just stop watering quite so much, and good luck
Reply:sorry, but unlees temps are in the 8os in your house everyday it wont flower. it thinks it is winter and is dormat. it is natural not to flower indoors. if you cant plant it outside can you put it in a pot at least. needs plant food too.

Can someone give me a ballpark for wedding flowers?

My fiance and I are crunching numbers for our wedding/reception. I would want a SIMPLE bouquet, not a big flower person for me and my 4 bridesmaids. Plus we would need boutiners (sp?) for then men. If we have at the venue I want (a mansion). They have a TON of floral and candles already set up for our ceremony and reception so we would only need the flowers mentioned above. If we have it at a hotel ballroom (ceremony and reception) I would think we would have to pay for some flower or greenery for the ceremony site and the centerpieces (about 15 tables) as well. Can someone give me a ballpark figure? I%26#039;m trying to convince my fiance that the extra we pay for the mansion we would save in floral. (They will set up ALL our stuff for us at the mansion, wo we would not a florist to come, we could just pick up the flowers at Sam%26#039;s)

Reply:Depending on the time of year your getting married might influence your other colors. You can always add greenery in there ( those dark hunter green leather leaf things, or the normal %26#039;wedding bouquet%26#039; fern type stuff) If its a spring/summery wedding there are those really pale green flowers in a variety of types ( roses, alstromeria, and you can have anything tinted that color) If its a fall/winter wedding, you could add some dark gold roses, mums, etc, even maybe add some of those tiny pinecone things in there. Try putting different colors of silk flowers together at a craft store to see what you like, you could even take some samples to the florist so they could see an example of what your thinking of. You%26#039;ll find though with real flowers, that almost anything goes together (you know, flowers in a garden never clash, no matter what colors they are) If you want something really simple and striking , those dark burgundy calla lillies are gorgeous all by themselves!

Reply:You should look up a color wheel. It has every color you could imagine and directly across from it, are the colors that coordinate with it. For example, yellows and golds go with purple, so I would suggest maybe a pale yellow flower.

I have a small square shaped patio area at the back of my property. It is completely paved with the exception of a strip of earth approx 40cm deep in front of the back fence (which is about 3.5m long). Said back fence is a pole style fence allowing people to see into my garden and house from the outside.

Ideally I’d like to cover the fence with climbers but at the same time I’d also quite like to have colourful flowers.

Can anyone offer any advice? I’m a complete gardening beginner.

Having a look on a few websites I really like the look of Maypop’s and I understand Clematis are also really good climbers. Can I introduce smaller non-climbing plants into such a small area or would they not grow well together?

The garden is warm and gets a good amount of sun from around 2pm onwards but is shady during the mornings.

Climbers %26amp; flowers?
I%26#039;d look for a passion flower! They have large, shiny, evergreen leaves, beautfiully complex flowers in summer and orange fruits in autumn. They grow very quickly and doesn%26#039;t mind if it%26#039;s in sun or shade. I%26#039;ve got one on a trellis and it%26#039;s doubled in size in about 6 months!

I have a medium to large garden and the climber took one side of the fence- the colour is a mixture of purples and pinks just all over -truly amazing, and the fragrance in the summertime- wow! Me being me didnt realise that it was dying, last year it flowered about half of what it used to- this year, dead.

Reply:My clematis this year-- on the north side of my home is doing very, very well. I used a 17-17-17 fertilizer for the first time on my lawn, and have made sure I kept the moisture sufficient.

I agree with Sweet Autumn clematis-- it has the most wonderful fragrance! But it only blooms in the fall here.

No one mentioned trumpet vine. It is a pest here, zone 7-- but it is one strong plant. As expected-- hummingbirds love trumpet vine. It also may need annual trimming.

A annual that is pretty is hyacinth bean vine. It is prolific, has purple and white blooms that look like peas, has pretty purple seed pods that overwinter in zone 7.

other flowers? With support from you-- no problem. Remember all that growing stuff is drawing nourishment from that small space-- and where ever the roots can go.

Don%26#039;t forget pots for color! Hanging or sitting on the ground.

Reply:Wisteria would be wonderful, but it is lethal (beware if you have children). Trumpet vine or any type of Jasmine would be great too...

Adding non-climbers could accent the climbers...even if you put them in some decorative pots. Another idea would be statues or big stones...they are decorative as well...
Reply:Clematis is good but can be picky - some people have no trouble with it - mine are just pathetic.

Cotoneaster is a hardy plant that seems to take ages to establish but once it has it will just keep going - I have to trim it all the time or it would cover the windows.

Wisteria is lovely but I think that%26#039;s quite slow growing as well.

But you could attach pots partway up the screen and train things from there while you are waiting for the others to grow - just an idea - I used on my porch trellis.
Reply:If you are looking for a perennial vine, then it%26#039;s hard to beat Clematis. My personal favorite climber is Sweet Autumn Clematis (Clematis maximowiciana or C. terniflora); a fast growing twining climber that can reach 20ft or more. While normal Clematis blooms early, Sweet Autumn Clematis will bloom late August until freeze (we%26#039;re in Zone 5 here). Mine is completely covered with fragrant, white, silver-dollar sized blooms every year. It prefers to keep it%26#039;s feet in the shade, so I planted a few Rudbeckia in front of it.

To add color, I usually plant several annual vines nearby; usually Morning Glories (Ipomoea) or Black-Eyed Susan Vine (Thurnbergia)

Depending on whether or not you get frost in your area, you probably should wait to plant your sunflowers. They do best if you start them in pots in February and have them in the ground by late March.

I am currently planning my wedding (June 2008) and I am trying to figure out what type of flowers to decorate with as well as hold (both me and my bridesmaids) that would look nice with robin%26#039;s egg blue (with dark chocolate accents). Lilies are my favorite but finding blue lilies might be a problem, any ideas?

I did robin blue in my wedding for June as well. I did light blue, dark blue, soft pink and white flowers. If you love lilys then make sure your bouquet has them in there. You can do stargazer lilys for your girls bouquets. They look like this

However, I would talk to your florist and see what she thinks you should do. Any color will go great with blues and browns, but while you are in the shop take a look at some of the other flowers in there. You may see something that really catches your eye and you want to have for flowers. Remember that your flowers do not have to match the dresses, they need to accent them and bring out the color of the dresses.

I%26#039;ve been dating a really awesome girl for a little less than 2 weeks and things have been great. I want to get her some flowers for her apartment, but I admittedly don%26#039;t know squat about flowers other than roses. Red roses might be a little much considering the short length of time we%26#039;ve known each other, although I know we%26#039;re both into each other pretty seriously. What else can I get that isn%26#039;t hideous and would spruce up her apartment as well?

She has a cat if that matters at all.

Tell her what they are for and who they are for. They will make you a lovely bunch of flowers for her and within a price-range that you specify.

Edible flowers for container gardening in shade?

I%26#039;m starting a container garden with a north facing patio (cringe). I gave up a southern view for a a skyline what can i say. So anyway i%26#039;m a cook, sometimes profesionaly, and wanted to try to grow and then incorperate some edible flowers into my cooking. Does anyone know any that grow well on little sunlight? I%26#039;m going to end up putting it in a closet with a sun lamp in the winter by defualt but would like something that didnt become anemic you know?

Violets, violas, pansies and nastursiumns. Here is a site that lists many more, plus ways to use them. However, the ones I listed (other than traditional herbs, rosemary, thyme, etc.) are the ones most suited for shade container gardening.

Tomatoes - lots of flowers but no fruit. Why?

I bought three tomato plants (%26quot;Tumbler%26quot;)in May from a garden centre. They have grown well and are all covered in flowers. But there is no sign of any tomatoes, and now the flowers are starting to die and fall.

What has happened? Is there anything I can do?

Tomatoes - lots of flowers but no fruit. Why?
Check where the flower used to be. If you see a tiny green ball, then you%26#039;ll have tomatoes soon. If there isn%26#039;t anything there, then it probably is a problem with over or under watering. Or stress from being moved or transplanted.

The flowers have to be pollinated with an insect, usually bees. I%26#039;m assuming if they are outdoors then there%26#039;s no problem with that.
Reply:You must feed them with Tomatorite liquid fertiliser once a week. Start now and you may be just in time to save the plants. They are very early though, are they in a greenhouse?

You wouldn%26#039;t normally expect fruits til July/August time.

They also need lots sun and heat, and we don%26#039;t get an awful lot of that in th U.K.
Reply:The tomatoes will start to grow now that the flowers have started to fall off and you will hopefully have more that you know what to do with

Lightly tap the plants when they are in flower this helps with pollination you can also pollinate using a small artist%26#039;s brush or rabbit foot. Water level, tomatoes are gross feeders and need a lot of water and fertiliser to complete the cycle of seed, plant ,fruit ,seed

You also have to take into account where the wedding will take place (ballroom? garden?), time of the day, season, etc. And last but not least, everyone has a different skin tone and the color must be flattering to everyone, which is too difficult..... black is the only color I can think of that can achieve this. I just planted some flowers on Saturday. Thist morning when I went to look at them the leaves had begun to turn white. NOT POWDERY, just like someone sucked all the green out of them. They white leaves are limp as well. What is going on, I planted another kind of flower and they are doing fine.

Check at sams club.com. You can buy gerbera daisies in lots of colors and have them shipped to you at a very low cost. This is what I am doing for my wedding, the cost is many many times lower than using a florist. Anyway, with these big happy sunshiney daisies, they look best in bunches of one or three without a lot of florists%26#039; greenery mucking things up.

Here%26#039;s the situation:

I know this girl. We have gone out for %26quot;friends%26quot; coffee a couple times. We get along well but we aren%26#039;t %26quot;dating%26quot; yet. I%26#039;m pretty sure she likes me and its more than obvious I like her.

She%26#039;s going in for surgery on Friday (nothing life threatening) and will be out of commission for about a week. At the same time, I%26#039;m going out of town so its not like I%26#039;ll be around during all this.

I want to send her %26quot;get well%26quot; flowers. They should be the type that will convey the basic message but also not cross too many lines...but I also plan on attaching a note mentioning our going out on a real date after she recovers and I get back.

Here are my questions:

1.) What kind of flowers say this best?

2.) When should I send them? Before the surgery or after?

3.) Does including the offer of the date with the flowers seem right or should I call/e-mail while she%26#039;s recovering?

2) Send them after the surgery. She%26#039;ll have too much on her mind before the surgery and it%26#039;d be nice to look at them while she%26#039;s recovering.

3) No. Sending her flowers is more than enough in recovery. She%26#039;s going to be worried about how the surgery went, how soon she%26#039;ll be able to go home and see her family or whatever. Just sending the flowers will send the message that you have her best concerns at heart (not that you%26#039;re trying to get into her pants via pity.)

4) Don%26#039;t call her while she%26#039;s recovering to ask her out. Just ask her if she liked the flowers, how she%26#039;s feeling, when she thinks she%26#039;ll go home, what the doctors think, etc. when you get back is the best time to ask her out again. When she looks well enough that she might feel up to it.

Reply:Definitely roses. Not red--they mean love and not yellow--they mean friendship and you want more. Pink is perfect although I%26#039;m not sure of the meaning of giving pink roses. You should give them to her before surgery because she will be nervous and they will make her smile and you will score points because she will be emotional and think that it is sweet that you were thinking of her.

Do not ask her on a date she has enough on her mind. Wait until you return and you visit her while she is recuperating. You can tell her that you were thinking about her and that you are so glad she is doing well... And then you ask her on a date.

Whatever you do don%26#039;t send a cheap bouquet, it%26#039;s better not to send it at all if it looks cheap. Now there is nothing wrong with a cheap bouquet of flowers, but those should be handed personally to the woman. Send them the day of the surgery and call her several days later. When you talk to her tell her you didn%26#039;t want to call too soon because you wanted to give her a chance to rest. As far as the note I think it is nice to offer a date with the flowers, I think she will really like that.

My fiancee%26#039;s mom offered to do my flowers. She thought it would be a good project for her since she had a brain anyeurism last summer and can no longer work. I got together pics and showed her what I wanted and she said no problem. The thing is, she%26#039;s finished my bmaids flowers (supposed to be bouquest of calla lilies, very simple looking) and they are calla lily pins with a rose at the bottom. Now, we talked about that for the guys but I guess she got confused (she%26#039;s very forgettful since her anyeurism, to the point of calling 3 or 4 times in a row to ask the same question). Well now my sisters who are my bmaids are complaining about having to pin something to their dresses since they%26#039;re paying for the dresses. I%26#039;m sad that the flowers won%26#039;t be the way I%26#039;d hoped, but have pretty much gotten over that. I am just sick of hearing my sisters gripe about how I should tell my fmil to redo the flowers and I don%26#039;t want to hurt my fmil%26#039;s feelings over something this silly. What should I do?

Yesterday I ordered flowers from a local shop and was planning to pick them up today and hand delivering them to a girl that I have been hanging out with here and there for the last few months. She knows that I%26#039;m interested in her.

Anyway she was gone the whole week on a business trip and just got in last night. Before I could get to ask her to go to dinner with me tonight she fell asleep. I asked her in email (she is at work) if she wants to have dinner tonight and she said she has Acting Class tonight (not a college/univ class).

Reply:Hybiscus are native to your area and come in many different colors: red, orange, pink, yellow! They are very easy to take care of, are great plants to grow in large pots and the blooms are very large and showy.

Check the %26quot;zone%26quot; you live in and make sure. Here%26#039;s a link with lots of zone and plant information, as well as plant groupings for different zones, sun, shade, etc. You%26#039;ll also be able to see what plants flower and bloom and what plants are just great coloring foliage.

Two to three inches of mulch on top around the plants helps keep in the moisture, as well as mixing in some potting soil that helps retain moisture. Plants in pots don%26#039;t hold in moisture like the ground so they%26#039;ll have to be watered more frequently.

Reply:I love sweet pea bushes, they do well in containers, bloom almost all year long and have a beautiful pink/purple flower with a delicate sweet scent. Plus they are inexpensive, around 5 dollars for a gallon pot. I%26#039;m in north county so we get temps in the 100%26#039;s during the summer so you have to water container bound plants more frequently. Million bells, geraniums, impatiens (for shady areas) hydrangea (also shady loving), petunias (especially the new mounding habit type they have out now), orchids like the epidendrum or Mexican orchid, begonia, columbine, vinca, kilanchloe, sweet breath of heaven, all grow well in containers, hanging baskets, window boxes, and planter boxes in my yard.

The girl who I am interested in (who is also interested in me, but does not feel like she is ready for a relationship after her last breakup) invited me over to keep her company after she has her root canal. I have never had one or been around someone who just had one, so I don%26#039;t know how bad they are. Does a root canal warrant Get-Well-Soon flowers? Or should I skip the get-well soon and just take over some movies?

How do i know if i have flowers or weeds?

i sowed some seed packets about 2 months ago. i thought one pot was growing well, but no flowers, yet. so i took a piece to the nursery and the guy said it was a weed. i have other planters that i put other seeds in and i have some growth but no flowers on any of them. how and when will i know if they are weeds or flowers? i don%26#039;t really remember what i planted so i can%26#039;t look them up. i do know i planted morning glory and i do have the vine part going but no flowers there either. does anyone know what i should do or look for b/c if they are all weeds, i want to pull them sooner than later %26amp; buy a few flats but i also don%26#039;t want to jump the gun. ahh it%26#039;s a mess. please help. i prefer not to go back to the nursery if possible. thanks

the definition of a weed is just any plant you don%26#039;t want,.....all plants Flower, even the plants you call weeds,.....if you were growing corn, and a rose came up and you did not want it there, that in definition would be a weed,.....
Reply:well, i would, i think. i%26#039;d go to a different nursery (or the same one, if you like it, but get a different salesperson) with a cutting.

or, take a cutting, put it in water and sit it beside your computer. go through google images and check out weeds. focus on the leaf.

or, go to the library and take out some gardening books.

i%26#039;d certainly look on google images for morning glories so you know what you%26#039;ve got there. they have a heart-shaped leaf, quite a dark green. they need full sun to bloom. they won%26#039;t bloom nearly as much, if at all, if they%26#039;re climbing in the shade.

you could also take a pix of the cutting and post it on a gardening message board site. someone might know what they are.

Reply:i have found that anything with sharp prickelies is a weed. the stuff from seed takes forever and never looks as good as if you buy flats tho.

I have a couple of concrete tubs outside the front the the house which are in the full sun all day. I%26#039;ve tried several different flowers but despite regular watering I can%26#039;t get anything to do very well as in the height of summer the heat is too much for most plants. I was going to try nasturtiums but has anyone else got any helpful advice.

Try a plant called valarian in a lot of colour%26#039;s, it will grow any place, and any type of soil, once flowered to the end cut back in a week you have more flowers, and requires very little water..

Reply:I like blue salvia, gloriosa daisies (rudbeckia), fern-leaf yarrow, dwarf daylilies, you might try a dwarf form of ceanothus (California wild lilac). They tolerate heat and the sun very well; but whatever plants you choose, the most important thing is to not let your plant roots dry out. Containers generally have a tendency to cook the roots--sooooooo in hot summer days you may have to water more than once a day.

Reply:I would say hens and chicks. They are neat and come back every year. Plus they are really hardy. Also you might try marigolds or moss ross.

Reply:First make sure that you change the soil every year.

Replace the old stuff with soil like Miracle Grow Moisture retaining potting soil.

Get new overnight diapers with a moisture retention core.

Put the diapers in a bucket of water for 20 minutes until they are full and puffy. Put the diapers in the bottom of your concrete tub. Use one or two if the tubs are huge.

Add your soil and take the hose and really give it a good soak. Let it stand for a good hour to have the soil get evenly moist.

Now you%26#039;re ready for plants. For full sun I%26#039;ve found Ivy Geraniums and light creamy marigolds are good. Put a vine like vinca in, and you should be able to keep up with the watering with the soaked diapers in the bottom to hold your plants over. This doesn%26#039;t mean you don%26#039;t need to water but it gives your plants a fighting chance in the hottest of days.

Try growing chili plants (capsicum), they enjoy full sun and you get to eat the produce. They also look beautiful....
Reply:You don%26#039;t say where you are, so it is difficult to guage the heat you arre talking about. I am in Johannesburg, which gets extremely hot in summer, and I found Petunias are good in the sun. Iris, the flag variety like sunny positions. Verbena in all sorts of bright colours love sun and don%26#039;t need much watering. How about trying a bouganvillea, they are gorgeous in pots, and you can move them if you get any sign of frost in the winter. Just a few suggestions.
Reply:Lavenders are a good bet.They will soon fill a container and their small silver leaves help reflect sunlight and so don%26#039;t need to be watered so much. Any silver leafed plants should cope in dry sunny conditions . Rosemary%26#039;s are another similar plant. Summer bedding plants are OK but they are expensive high maintenance and only last a season.

I am getting married this July. The bridesmaids are wearing navy blue dresses and the groomsmen are wearing navy blue vests. The reception room has beige chairs, white tablecloths, and a patterned navy blue/mauve carpet. I would like to know why kinds of flowers and colors of flowers I could have for the bouquets, as well as what colors and types of flowers would work best in that room. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Reply:In July you can use summer flowers. Yellow is a blue complement, so I would think asters, lilys, mixed colorful flowers and sunflowers. One of the most beautiful centerpieces I ever saw was sunflowers with a few mixed blue and purples in a big clear glass vase which was filled with lemons. Stunning! It had some long spriggley things in it for added height.
Reply:You%26#039;ll always be safe with white. I think you%26#039;d want to avoid red because it would look too American-flag like. Lavendar roses alone or mixed with other purples that leant toward the blue side would be beautiful. Violets are especially sweet in weddings.

Reply:There are tons of silk flowers available the will compliment the navy blue. First find out what you like then start looking from there. You could always use white, or antiques colored flowers. There are many varieties of white, cream and antique colored roses both fresh and silk. Congrats!

What should i do about flowers that were mis-sent to my home?

i ordered flowers from ftd.com for my mother and paid extra money so that they would be delivered ON TIME to my mom who lives with me. Well, today, my mother got her flowers (a day late). They were left with a neighbor while we were out of the house. There was a SECOND vase of flowers that i did NOT order. At first i thought that was their compensation for being a day late, until i saw a card that had another persons name on it. when i looked up the person on white pages.com and then mapquested her (to see if she was nearby so i could take them to the right house) i found out she was a 65 year old woman..who lives ACROSS TOWN and in a less-than-safe area of town. What should i do? Who do i contact? i mean, ftd.com handles the orders but they%26#039;re sent from local shops that aren%26#039;t disclosed on the card. i feel simply awful for not taking them to her, but i%26#039;d have 3 kids with me and i don%26#039;t want to risk taking them into a part of town thats known for being unsafe. what do i do?

Contact FTD, they will be able to rectify the situation. It is not up to you to deliver the flowers, not to mention if they were just left at your house it is nice enough that you are trying to help the flowers get to the person who they were bought for.

As for your late flowers I hope that you get some sort of compensation (monetary) for the flowers you purchased for your mom. I have had this happen to me and I ended up with the flowers being free and I also worked at a well known national florist company and they always rectified complaints, usually with some sort of credit and coupon for your next order.

It is not your business to deliver the flowers to the right person. But it is courteous to let the florist know about the mistake.

Well, at my sister%26#039;s dance recitals, all of the dad%26#039;s always got their daughters flowers and that is just something i learned happens at dance stuff -- men get women flowers. Now is that only for real big things or small as well. I%26#039;m going to surprise a girl i%26#039;m dating/not dating (complicated) by going to a performance. It%26#039;s not a major one but rather a four night show her class (college class at BIG school) is performing for the public. Big enough for flowers?

My first reaction to your question is: Daffodils!!! They%26#039;re delightfully springy and pretty and fragrant -- and retro! Daffodills and maybe some bluebells... you could wrap a ribbon up the stems and tie a bow so the ends hang down over the bridesmaids hands... could be really pretty!!!

Tulips would be a pretty alternative - and there are a lot of colors available. And both options should be very affordible in the spring!

And, for the more flat chested maids, she does not have to worry about being able to hold the dress up. Yet, the dress provides for a view of the cleavage, just fabulous, especially for the maid looking for a mate at the wedding. Now, yellow flowers would go perfectly stupendous with this frock. Have you considered roses? or, for the bride on a budget, yellow daisies are just beautiful, especially for a spring wedding. Reply:You should have a budget for all this by now. If you know how much you are willing to spend take a swatch of fabric from the dresses to several florists and ask for suggestions. They should have a book of floral designs in different price ranges. Take very good notes when you see something you like even if it is a little more expensive than you are planning on. A lot of times you can get the same feel with a less expensive flower combination.

For hair and makeup get out the magazines for brides and look for someone with your face shape and type of hair. Also look at the neckline of the dress because that will help you decide which style will look best. If you don%26#039;t want to spend the bucks for the magazines most large public libraries have the most popular ones for you to look at and you can scan the photos of what you like best to take to the salon. Take the photos in a couple weeks before the wedding along with your headpiece so your stylist can see what you are thinking about and make suggestions. She is the expert so use her knowledge.

For the bridesmaids bouquets you can use carnations and daisies-they are fairly inexpensive flowers. You can try some light yellow gerbera daisies, with maybe a ring of purple carnations surrounding them. The rich purple color will go great with the dresses that you selected-which are beautiful

As far as make-up one great tip that I can give you is do not skimp on the blush...the way that you look in person is going to look a lot different than the way the pictures turn out. A lot of brides end up not using enough blush because they think it makes them look like clowns-but many of them are sorry when the pictures come back and they look pale and drawn out.

If you love to do your eyes dark and dramatic then you should definitely do that...just make sure that you wear a nude/neutral lip color. If you want to do a bright lip color, then make the eyes less dramatic-I personally like the dramatic eyes with neutral lips.

Personnally I hate flowers. To me they are pointless. You are going to go out and buy her something that is just going to die in a matter of days. Is that how you want to show someone you care, by giving them something that is going to die? You would be better off with a plant, stuffed animal, and/or chocolates. At least these will last a bit longer and be a bit more enjoyable. I think it would be nice of you to drive down their and deliver them yourself. The worst thing she can say is no, right? Long distance relationships can be good and bad. That is something you will have to decide after you know if she likes you.

I think that if she likes you- you will get a phone call right away- if she doesn%26#039;t you won%26#039;t, but at least your won%26#039;t get rejected to your face. Make sure you pick red roses, there is not an ambiguos meaning behind that.

Do You Think Putting Flowers In A Goldfish Tank Is Okay?

My friend has a 10 gallon tank for a few fantail goldfish. Well, she likes putting regular flowers and flower stems in the tank with the goldfish. The flowers aren%26#039;t submerged in the water, but just come right at the top of the water. With the stems, she uses sccissors and cut long skinny slits and puts it in the tank. The goldfish eat/nibble at it. Is this okay to do? Will it help take ammonia out?

A 10 gallon tank is the absolute bare minimum size required for one fancy goldfish. The recommended stocking for fancies is a 20 gallon tank for one fancy goldfish, then an additional 10 gallons for each additional fancy goldfish. The filter must handle at least twice the capacity of a properly sized tank.

So, your friend%26#039;s goldfish tank is very overstocked. Water changes, vacuuming the substrate and upgrading the tank size is the only way to manage the excessive ammonia.

I would not recommend letting goldfish %26quot;free feed%26quot; in such a seriously overstocked tank. The more they eat, the more they poop, and the more ammonia will be produced in the tank. Goldfish will produce about 33% of their body weight in waste every day without the overfeeding. Leaving vegitation in an overstocked goldfish tank is an extremely bad idea.

As long as the flower stems are not poisonous to the fish, then in a properly sized tank, feeding any type of vegitation to goldfish is fine as they will eat anything. This should only be done as a treat and not done on a routine basis.

The flowers will ADD ammonia to the tank because they will cause the goldfish to produce more waste, and the stems will decompose which will also produce more ammonia.

Your friend also needs to be extremely careful when selecting flowers to put in a fish tank. Those cut in a yard may have been exposed to insect repellent and/or other harsh chemicals that will kill the fish. Stems purchased from a flower shop will absolutely have been fixed with preservatives, dyes, and other floral chemicals. All can be lethal to fish.
Reply:Having rotting plants in a tank is never a good idea. It will only add to the ammonia problem she%26#039;s already facing with the overstocked tank.

However, I would be more concerned about exposing the fish to pesticides. If these flowers are growing in her yard and she knows they have not be sprayed with anything then pesticides are not a problem. If the flowers are from a shop or a public garden they are likely contaminated and not safe for fish.

If they%26#039;re non-toxic, and don%26#039;t take up all of the surface area of the water, it%26#039;s probably OK for short periods of time.

Cut flowers are dying. It takes a little while to show, but they%26#039;re releasing chemicals into the water that isn%26#039;t good for the fish.

Basically, flowers in the fish bowl isn%26#039;t deadly, but not the best idea either.

Reply:Cut flowers in the commercial trade have been treated with a heavy dose of insecticide. Unless the flowers she put in are certified organic (which is rare) or came from her own backyard, Goldfish will most likely become sick or die.

Reply:Flowers, water, N fish, all come from the same-ness. It%26#039;s fine. Unless the flowers are bought cut, most stores add preservatives to make the flowers last longer, which might be a bit harmful, but not deadly, to the fish. Other than, it%26#039;s fine.

Reply:the plants in the fish tank will produce oxygen in the water which is a good thing for the fish, they work together, the fish and the plant. It is also safe for the fish to nibble at the stems it is a great source of food for them. The only possible problem is excessive algae build up in the water but some simple water changes will fix that right up. Good luck

If its like daisy%26#039;s and stuff probably not. but flowers that are meant to be put in water sure. like if you do put a flower in the water make sure the rootes are in the water, but the flower is out of the water. I used to have a betta fish and that is what we would do to its water. so i dont think it would hurt but the flower might die if you put the whole thing in the water. try putting just the stem/roots in there only.

I have finally picked out my wedding flowers and have got my bouquet already made, under my fiances approval of colors and the flower. I just thought about this though. My flowers are lavender to dark purple and Im not sure if my fiance is just telling me he doesn tmind wearing one as a boutinerre or if he really does mind and isnt saying anything. So brides would you be ok with your groom wearing this flower and color as a boutinerre?

Reply:You know, the groom%26#039;s boutonniere does not have to match. Give him a choice, white rose or carnation, or purple flowers.

Old school way gave the groom a white rose, and the groomsmen wore white carnations. And the bride almost always had a white bouquet, or white in it.

If your dress is white, he will still match you!

I sincerely hope that you are not using artificial flowers for the boutinere or the bridal bouquet or bridesmaids%26#039; flowers, I feel that doing so is tacky and without warmth.

As for the color, I don%26#039;t think you fiance should feel effeminate or uncomfortable wearing such colors for his boutinere. However, I do wonder if the colors go well with what he plans on wearing fro the wedding ceremony and/or reception.

It is highly unlikely that your fiance would tell you that he does not mind when he actually does mind. I cannot picture him doing this under any circumstances other than to just shut you up for you to stop nagging him about all the wedding stuff in general.

Reply:Without being specific, it%26#039;s hard to tell. Are you having problems in your current relationship? Are you trying to win this girls heart? And even more then that, what type of girl she is could mean all the difference. A lot of girls like poetry and I don%26#039;t think any girl would turn away flowers unless she was allergic. If the poem is from the heart and expresses your true feelings, I think it would be hard to go wrong.
